Historical Perspective

Naked Kiting, the natural way to fly, seems to have originated back in the early 1990's. Corey Jensen tells the story of naked buggying...

"Back in the day... Like 1991 or so, I'd acquired a buggy and was getting pretty excited.
I wanted to teach others but didn't want to give up MY ride, so I contacted Don Tabor (Top Of The Line Kites) and Jon Reinschreiber (Paint The Sky Kites) and borrowed their buggys for the winter. I'd take friends to El Mirage Dry Lake and teach them to buggy.

The year before, Jon and Jill had organized a kite fly on Sauvie Island (a clothing optional beach on the Columbia River just outside Portland Oregon) and submitted a photo to Kite Lines of 6 of them (including David & Susan Gomberg) holding a 10' Flexi in front of themselves in a manner that suggested they were naked behind it.
Valerie at Kite Lines got more response from that little photo than almost anything she'd published. We all got a laugh from the incident.

So when Chuck Abney and Ron Gibian and I were riding at Elmer's one weekend, to thank Jon for the loan of his buggy, we decided a naked buggy photo would be appropriate. We shot stills and videos. Pretty funny stuff.

I started showing the video at events I attended. Some one remarked that the buggy looked dangerous. I replied that it was so dangerous we did it naked. A big joke. With big laughs. But it touched a nerve in many buggiers.

Then, in 1993 (I think) Scott Dyer made some sterling silver buggy naked pins. Andrew Beattie told folks the way to get one was to be photographed buggying naked and send the photo to me with money and you'd get a pin. I have to be careful opening my mail in front of my parents or strangers. Pictures of naked people drop out. Not a result I had anticipated. Scott hasn't made pins for quite a while now, but I've contracted with another jeweler to do them again. The same rules apply. Cost will probably be $35."
