Portsmouth International Kite Festival
Saturday 28th - Monday 30th August 2004
Location: Southsea Common, Southsea, Portsmouth, Hampshire
Organised by: The
Kite Society
This was the 13th (or "12a" for the superstitious!)
Portsmouth International Kite Festival, and a very successful one it was
too!
Plenty of kite fliers & public turned up to watch the
excellent displays by kite teams and individuals from all around the world
- invited flyers from the UK, Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, Italy,
New Zealand, Kuwait, Spain and the USA amongst others!
The weather had improved somewhat from the dreadful conditions
experienced in the UK earlier in the week; the festival stayed
dry all weekend (apart from 5 minutes of a light shower on Sunday
afternoon).
The wind started off light on Saturday and built up during the
day. On Sunday the wind was very strong with reports of 35mph
gusting to 41mph! Many kites broke free and drifted across the
road between the field and the hotels - some were retrieved but
unfortunately others became snagged on top of the buildings or
were simply lost in between them...
This photo shows one of John Browning's Indonesian fighter kite
caught upon the lightning conductor of the Queens Hotel. Apparently
it had been his ambition for two years to park one on the lightning
conductor snag it, retrieve all the flying line and leave
the little beauty flying all by itself off the hotel. Also in
the photo is another fighter flying nearby.

Worlds Largest Kite
The (new) Worlds
Largest Kite was being flown for the first public event, on Saturday.
It was commissioned by the Al Farsi family of Kuwait, and is a Peter
Lynn Flag Kite, measuring 40 metres x 25 metres x 7 metres! (The design
is of course the flag of Kuwait).

Team / Quad Line Flying
|
On Saturday, Team
Flic, The Flying Squad, Brian & Helen (aeolian), Dave Morley
and Heinrich Hohmann all teamed up for a 'mega-fly' of Revolution
style kites. The wind was around 10mph so it was quite challenging
to fly 15 vented kites in close proximity, especially in front of
so many spectators!
Sunday was even windier and super-vented kites were definitely
required! (Photos below are from Sunday)

Fractured Axel Sport Kite Demonstration
|
Local kite group Fractured
Axel were invited to give a demonstration of sport and trick
kiting in the main arena on Saturday. This was followed up on Sunday
by a Trickout competition, with pairs of flyers competing against
each other in quick-fire rounds.
The overall winner of the Trickout was Chris Goff, read more about
the results here:

Single Line Kites
|
There were many unusual single line kites being flown over the
course of the weekend, particularly by the overseas invited flyers.
Notable highlights were Sonja Graichen's own unique design of kites,
with rotating components that created colour and motion in the sky
as they flew. Claudio Capelli flew a selection of his beautiful
hand painted kites, while Robert Brasington's cellular creations
took to the sky with long flowing tails and striking applique patterns.
Unfortunately we didn't manage to get a photo of the large inflatable
'Cat in the Hat' kite before it broke free of its anchor point in
the strong wind!
