Middle Wallop Kite & Buggy Festival

Matrix megafly practice

Saturday 25 & Sunday 26 May 2002

Location: Middle Wallop Airfield, nr Andover, Hampshire.
Organised by:
Roy Broadley, Kites Up.

This was the first of two kite & buggy events held at Middle Wallop this year (the second is on 10th-11th August). The event attracted many buggiers and kite fliers, many of whom camped on site.

The event did not seem as busy as in previous years, probably more to do with the poor weather than anything else! Saturday was very windy (20+ mph) with showers occasionally through the day. Sunday had more frequent showers but slightly lighter winds (10 - 15mph). Both days were warm and sunny when the rain wasn't overhead! Still, even this didn't stop some buggiers who were out in all weathers..

Informal team flying demonstrations were on hand with Matrix Management, Team Echo, Bitter & Twisted, Evolver and Steve Matchett of the Flying Squad putting in appearances. A 'Matrix Megafly' took place on Saturday, with six Matrix fliers practising their manoeuvres.

A raffle was held on Saturday evening, with the influence of Marla Miller evident! Strips of tickets were sold and you could choose which "pot" to put your tickets into depending on which prize you wanted to win. The raffle was very successful and raised over £300 for the event fund. (Accusations of vote rigging on GaRRy Box's behalf were completely unfounded...)

There were plenty of different styles of buggies and traction kites on display, as well as plenty of trick kites and single line kites such as Andrew Beattie's Gecko and Carl Robertshaw's Delta Serpents.

As always, the organisation of this event was superb - there were plenty of kite traders, a variety of food and drink stalls (including the famous Georgio's Posh Pancakes - he stays open for as long as there are customers!) and a large beer tent where many kiters sought refuge from the howling winds and lashing rain!

The wind was so bad on Friday afternoon that one trader lost his marquee to the winds, it tumbled off down the field and out of view, chased by a Transit van and four people. They managed to retrieve it eventually, but it was almost trashed in the process. On Saturday morning we saw that the trader had got a brand new tent!

Here are the photos from Saturday & Sunday.
